The Elaine Nekritz Trophy Race was created in 2006 to ensure that women had the opportunity to race in an event that offered a higher level of competitiveness and a higher prize distribution. The event is sponsored by Alberto’s of Highland Park. Elaine has a long history of affiliation with the shop and it was fitting for them to be part of this important milestone for the women’s program at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome.  The event is ranked among the largest prize offering for women racers.  Two races are held and elite race (category I/II/III) and a category IV.

For the 2nd year, the event will be sponsored by Alberto’s of Highland Park and will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2007. The race will boast a $1,000 total purse with the elite women racing 35 laps for the privilege of having her name engraved on the trophy and the category IV women will race 15 laps. The Elaine Nekritz Trophy will provide the winner with a trifecta of honors since the event is designated as the velodrome, Elite Qualifier and Illinois State Championship; in other words the elite winner will earn bragging rights of becoming the velodrome, Illinois State Champion while also qualifying for the USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships to be held in Carson, CA on October 3-7, 2007.

“The track was an integral part of my success as a criterium racer.  It taught me tactics, handling in tight spaces and gave me the ability to attack, recover and attack again.  The good thing about track racing was that if you made a mistake, there were two more races to try and get it right” stated Nekritz.
